On March 16, 1861, Russell, the Overland Mail Company, and Western Stage Company signed a contract dividing the central mail route, eliminating competition between the Missouri River and Salt Lake City. The Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Company became a subcontractor on its former route, receiving $470,000 in mail pay while revenues were divided among the three companies.
